        The use of lasers in dentistry was introduced by Miaman in the 1960s. This led to continuous research in various applications of lasers in dentistry. Lasers have been developed having many hard and soft tissue applications.         What are LASERS?

        LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. They are a form of electromagnetic energy where photons are generated from a medium by stimulating the medium from an external source of energy. Albert Einstein, in 1917 laid the foundation for the invention of lasers and also its predecessor “The Maser”. He theorized that photoelectric amplification could emit a single frequency, in other words, stimulated emission. The term was first introduced in 1959 by a student of the Colombia University, Gordon Gould, in an article. The first functioning laser was built by Theodore Maiman at the Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, California. He used a mixture of helium and neon. Lasers have unique properties such as excellent monochromaticity and coherency.  Dental lasers have emission wavelengths ranging between 500 and 10,600 microns. They either emit a visible light beam or an invisible infrared light beam. Lasers are named after the chemical elements and compounds that compose the medium.


        What are the different emission modes of dental lasers?

        Lasers have three different modes of emission:


        Continuous Wave Mode     - The beam is emitted at one power level continuously as the foot switch is pressed


        Gated Pulse Mode               - Periodic on and off by a mechanical shutter present in the front of a continuous wave laser                             


        Free Running Pulse Mode - High energy laser light is emitted for a few micro seconds followed by a longer inactive gap.  These lasers are computer controlled
